Why does the seafaring profession attract young people in 2025?
The sea always fascinates with its power, freedom, and unique lifestyle. But is a career at sea really as profitable and romantic as it seems? In his new vlog, Captain Vitaliy Tyshchenko speaks honestly and unfiltered about what awaits a young Ukrainian who chooses a maritime career.
Among the main advantages is a decent salary. At sea, you can earn enough in a few years for a home and a car, as companies usually cover travel, meals, and personal equipment. An additional bonus — seafarers are often exempt from income taxes in many countries.
Another benefit is the opportunity to see the world. While it’s not a tourist trip, during port stops or crew changes, there’s a chance to explore new cities, and occasionally attend global events. Life on an international crew also exposes sailors to different cultures right on board.
The downsides nobody talks about
But it’s not all simple. Vitaliy emphasizes in the video that the biggest challenge is long periods away from family. Contracts can last 6–9 months, during which a seafarer misses important moments — the birth of a child, family celebrations, and the day-to-day support of loved ones.
Another risk is psychological isolation. Limited social interaction, weak internet, endless shifts, and engine vibrations often lead to stress or even depression. This profession strengthens character but demands exceptional resilience.
Physical risks also cannot be ignored: noise, chemical fumes, vibrations, and irregular work schedules affect health. Workdays are long, especially during intense port operations when the crew works almost nonstop.
Who is this profession for?
Despite the challenges, a seafaring career remains stable and in demand. Over 80% of global goods are transported by sea, and the need for crew continues to grow. This means young Ukrainians will still have opportunities to build a successful career at sea.
However, this profession is only suitable for those ready to face challenges: solitude, strict discipline, physical and psychological demands. At the same time, it rewards with good pay, stability, and a unique sense of freedom.
