Cultural Barriers in Multinational Crews: Working Conflict-Free in a Diverse Team

The modern merchant fleet is almost universally staffed by seafarers from diverse cultures, religions, and backgrounds. Working in a confined space for months on end amplifies any misunderstanding, making mutual respect and cross-cultural competence just as critical to vessel safety as adhering to technical procedures.

Communication Differences: Direct vs. High-Context Communication

Seafarers from different cultural backgrounds convey thoughts and process feedback in fundamentally different ways. European crew members often prefer direct communication-clear feedback, straightforward critiques, and open discussions of issues. Conversely, seafarers from many Asian countries lean toward high-context communication, where direct criticism is viewed as a public insult and a “loss of face.” In these instances, feedback should be delivered privately and constructively, focusing on collaborative problem-solving rather than individual error.

Authority, Initiative, and Linguistic Nuances

  • Power Distance: In certain cultures, senior officers hold absolute authority, making subordinates hesitant to speak up about safety hazards out of deference. It is essential to foster a robust “Stop Work Authority” culture, empowering every crew member to raise safety concerns regardless of rank.
  • Confirming Orders: In many cultures, saying “Yes” simply means “I hear you,” not “I fully understand and know how to execute the task.” Officers should verify comprehension using open-ended questions rather than prompts that invite a mere affirmative nod.
  • Shipboard Life and Traditions: Respecting dietary restrictions in the galley, accommodating prayer schedules, and honoring personal boundaries go a long way toward maintaining a healthy psychological climate on board.
