Beards and the sea — a combination with a long tradition. But while a beard used to simply be the norm for those who hadn’t seen a barber for months, it is now a conscious style choice. The problem is that the maritime climate is not the best environment for a beard, and without minimal care it becomes a problem rather than an asset.
Beard and Sea: Why Grooming is Harder Than It Seems
Salt water is the beard’s main enemy at sea. The moist and salty maritime microclimate dries out hair, making it brittle and prone to breaking. Add temperature swings between the engine room and deck, chlorine in the ship’s fresh water, and you understand: a beard at sea needs at least basic protection.
Trimming a beard during a long contract is an almost impossible task. So most seafarers simply let it grow and arrive at the barber after the voyage with whatever they’ve got. But a few simple habits make that result considerably better.
Minimal Beard Care During a Voyage
Three actions that take no more than 5 minutes a day:
- Moisturising. After showering — a few drops of beard oil on the palm, rubbed into the hair from root to tip. Oil protects against salty air and maintains structure.
- Combing. A beard brush or comb — daily. This prevents tangling and stimulates even growth.
- Outline. If you have a trimmer — tidy up the neck once a week. Even without a perfect shape, a clean neckline makes the beard look neater.
Nothing more is needed. Three steps — and the beard after the voyage looks like “grown on purpose,” not “forgot to shave.”
What to Pack for a Voyage: The Basic Beard Kit
The minimum kit takes up less space than a shoe cream:
- Beard oil (30 ml — lasts 3–4 months)
- Beard comb or brush
- USB-rechargeable trimmer (indispensable at sea)
- Beard shampoo or regular mild shampoo
Colouring a beard during a voyage without experience is a complex task. Better not to risk it and leave it for the barbershop after your return.
First Visit After the Voyage: What to Do With Your Beard at a Barbershop
The first barber visit after a voyage is not just a haircut. It’s a restoration. The barber assesses the condition of the beard after a long voyage, suggests a suitable shape, and performs a full grooming: tidying the outline, removing damaged ends, applying nourishing products.
Men’s haircuts with beards are a separate genre in a barber’s work. A good specialist takes into account face shape, beard type, and the image you want. For seafarers with a “voyage” beard this is especially relevant: over 6 months a beard can grow 7–10 cm, and it takes experience to shape it properly.
Andriy Salo — A Chief Mate Who Stopped Being Embarrassed by His Beard
Andriy had been at sea for 9 years. After every voyage the first thing he did was shave his beard “so as not to look like a vagrant,” as he put it. He never dared leave it.
After Stella Maris’s partnership with Admiral Barberhouse he booked a barber appointment for the first time with a full voyage beard. It turned out he had a naturally thick and even beard — it just had never had the right shape.
Now Andriy wears a neat short beard, maintained according to the routine the barber explained on the first visit. “I regret not doing this sooner” — that’s his whole review.
Which Beard Shape Suits You
There is no universal answer — it all depends on face shape, beard density and personal style. Basic rules:
- Round face — elongated beard, sharp angles at the jaw
- Square face — soft rounded shape, no harsh lines
- Long face — fuller on the sides, shorter at the bottom
- Oval face — almost any shape works
